- New Entrant FAQs | Campbells Bay School
New Entrants FAQs 01 When will my child start school? In New Zealand, children can start school on their fifth birthday. However, children are not legally required to start school until they are six years old as some children, for many reasons, may benefit from additional time in ECE. Once your child has been enrolled and started school it is important that they attend every day. At Campbells Bay School, we believe that children do best when they start alongside a small group who are all experiencing starting school together. We open two reception rooms each term, one at the beginning and another midway through the term, and we strongly encourage parents to start their children to align with the opening of these spaces. 2026 Cohort Dates: Term 2 Reception Class 4 start date between 25 May - 5 June (for those turning 5 between 2/5/26-5/6/26) Term 3 Reception Class 5 start date between 20 Jul - 31 July (for those turning 5 between 6/6/26-31/7/26) Term 3 Reception Class 6 start date between 24 Aug - 4 Sept (for those turning 5 between 1/8/26-4/9/26) Term 4 Reception Class 7 start date between 12 Oct - 23 Oct (for those turning 5 between 5/9/26-23/10/26) Term 4 Reception Class 8 start date between 16 Nov - 27 Nov (for those turning 5 between 24/10/26-27/11/26) Children can remain at ECE until their start date - they will continue to receive funding to attend ECE until they start school. Details of your child’s start date/cohort will be provided when you complete the enrolment process. 02 What is a reception space? Research has shown that starting school in a small group rather than individually helps children build relationships with their peers, reducing any anxiety children may face when joining a bigger pre-established group. The aim of a reception space is to support our newest students as they learn all about life here at CBS. It also offers an opportunity to get to know your child before they are placed in their first classroom in a warm and nurturing way. Your child will remain in the reception space for a minimum of four weeks before transitioning into their first classroom. Our reception space is led by our experienced learning leader. 03 What happens when they move out of the reception space? Your child will remain in the reception space for a minimum of four weeks before transitioning into their first classroom. Before they transition, you will have an opportunity to sit down and meet with their reception teacher to discuss how they have settled and hear a little more about the next steps for them as they continue their first year at CBS. During their time in the reception room teachers will be observing children and supporting them to make connections with others. When they move to their new classroom, the teacher will take these connections and friendships into consideration. 04 What year level will my child be when they first start school? Ministry guidelines suggest children born before 31st June can be classified as Year 1 when they start school and anyone born after this date would be classified as Year 0. At Campbells Bay School, we classify children born before 30th April as Year 1 and any child born after this date are classified as Year 0. If a child is born before 30th April and their start date is after this date they are still classified as Year 1. In special circumstances we may consider altering a child's classified year level. Decisions regarding year levels in these circumstances are discussed with whānau to ensure the best decision is made for the child. The ultimate decision is made by the school based on the evidence in school. 05 Can my child and I visit the school prior to their start date? Your child will have two visits prior to their first day. The main purpose of these visits is to provide an opportunity for your child to experience the classroom with the support of their whānau. Parents are asked to come along to the visits, join in and learn about school. During the first visit you will remain with your child in the classroom and participate in the fun that is starting school at CBS. While your children attend their second visit, we suggest that you return home or head out for a quick coffee with any of the other new parents. 06 When will I know who my child's class teacher is? You will be able to meet your child’s class teacher during the visit sessions. Once your child has started you are welcome to bring your child into the classroom every day and chat with the teacher. If you require a more formal or longer meeting, please speak to or email the teacher to make a time that suits you both. 07 What are the standard school hours? Our school day runs from 8.55am until 3pm in 3 blocks, with dedicated playtime and eating blocks, with a bell ringing to indicate the different breaks. Please make sure your child is dropped to class promptly at the start of day and collected at 3pm. Students are allowed into their classroom at the 8.30am bell, prior to this they must wait at the front of the school by the bike shed. 08 Does the school offer before and after school care? Yes, this is a service provided by an external provider called SKIDS. They operate out of our school hall. They operate both before school from 7.00am and after school until 6.00pm. You can find out more information on their website https://www.skids.co.nz/locations/campbells_bay/(https://www.skids.co.nz/locations/campbells_bay/) 09 Will my child have homework? For young children we do not set specific homework, however we ask that you read with or to your children every evening. Language is incredibly important so we encourage you to share stories, play games together and engage in conversation. Here is a great document that explains how we teach reading at CBS. 10 What should I give my child for lunch? It is important your child has enough energy to last the day. We promote healthy food and drink options in school. Sandwiches, fruit and vegetables are all great brain food for your child. If your child brings big pieces of fruit in for snack time it is helpful if it is peeled/cut up. We also encourage your children to bring a water bottle that is refilled daily with fresh water. 11 Does my child need a uniform? Yes, you can purchase the uniform from NZ Uniforms. There are multiple options for your child to choose from. They can wear any items from the uniform list, and can mix and match between the daily uniform and the sports uniform. It is most important your child is comfortable. 12 When and where should I buy my child's stationery? Pre-packed stationery is available to purchase online from Office Max throughout the year. Alternatively you can download the requirements list and purchase it from an alternative stationery provider. 13 Will my child have swimming lessons? The focus for year one is on building confidence in the water. The school pool is open for school lessons during Terms 1 and 4. Year one swim in Term 4. This is led by professional swim instructors and is part of your annual aquatics fee. 14 What should I do if my child has health issues? Please ensure that you have informed us of any issues when you complete the enrolment form and provide any information you have to the school office. Please talk about medications/implications with the teacher, and bring any medications to the office so that they can be stored safely. If, at any time throughout the year, your contact details change or medical issues require updating, please contact the office immediately. 15 How can I become involved in the school? You may like to be a parent helper in class. This shows your child that you think school is a great place to be and that you value what happens there. We do require parents to be police vetted to partake in any volunteer work alongside our students. This includes in class help, school trips and supporting any sports or cultural teams. You can download a police vetting form here Join our active and enthusiastic PTA. For further information please visit our PTA page via the button below.

- Attendance | Campbells Bay School
Absences If your child is away from school, we need to record their absence. If we are not informed of your child's absence, we will complete our safety check. If we are unable to clarify the reason for absence, children will be marked as 'T' (truant). MEDICAL If your child is going to be absent due to illness, you must call the office BEFORE 9:00 am on 09 410 7444, complete an absence through the Hero App or email safetycheck@campbellsbay.school.nz Holidays or long periods of absence If your child is going on holiday, please email the appropriate deputy principal. While your child is on holiday, they will be coded as G (holiday). Although we code this time as G, the Ministry of Education classifies it as unjustified leave and your child's attendance will reflect this. To minimise the impact absences have on the student's education, holidays scheduled during the term breaks would be appreciated. ALL OTHER ABSENCES If your child will be absent for reasons other than medical or a holiday, please email the office. admin@campbellsbay.school.nz REPORT ABSENCE

Allergy Aware School Food allergy management in schools is complex and involves far more than simply implementing a ban on a particular food group. Parents can be assured the care of students with severe allergies is managed according to the Allergy Organisation Guidelines (www.allergy.org.au). These guidelines include: Students with severe medically confirmed allergies are identified at enrolment, at which point, in consultation with parents, appropriate management plans are put in place including specialised response and treatment. Awareness is maintained through age-appropriate education of students with severe allergies and their peers. Aquatics Swimming is part of the school physical education programme. All children are required to take part in swimming lessons unless prevented on medical grounds. A note is required from parents. The school has an onsite swimming pool for our Years 0-3 and we offer our students eight lessons in either Term 1 or Term 4. The focus of these sessions is on water confidence, and consists of a combination of swimming lessons and water safety skills. For our Years 4-6 we use the local pool at AUT Millenium for water safety sessions, as well as visits to Vector Wero Whitewater Park and Mairangi Bay Surf Lifesaving Club. If you are going to be late to collect your child please contact the School Office as soon as possible. Children in the school grounds after 3.15pm not under the direct care of a parent or designated caregiver will be taken to School Office until 3.30pm and then taken to SKIDs who will provide supervision at a cost. Civil Defence In the event of a civil defence emergency the school will hold children at the school until they can be released into the care of their parents/caregivers or a person authorised to collect them. Communication will be put on the website of all details. Class Trips and Classroom Allowance To provide students with additional learning experiences, teachers often plan full year level visits outside the school, cultural performances, require additional classroom resources and stationery, (e.g. certificates, posters, display material etc) or invite guests into the school to share with the students. To assist towards the cost for each student to participate, we ask that parents make an annual contribution towards these learning experiences. This contribution however, does not cover any additional sporting or cultural event costs that your child may be invited to attend. The Year 4 camp experience and the Years 5 and 6 camps are extra, along with the end of year activities for Year 6. The cost for these activities will be communicated by the teacher as soon as they are known. At enrolment you will be asked for written permission for your child to be involved in all trips for the years they are at Campbells Bay School. Collecting Students during School Hours Please make arrangements with your child’s class teacher should you need to collect your child from school before 3:00pm. You must sign your child out of school on the iPad provided at the office. You may collect your child from the office or from their classroom. No matter what time of the school day you are meeting your child, you must report to the school office so that the attendance registers can be kept up to date in case of emergencies. If you are collecting your child from the classroom, please firstly report to the school office and once you have signed them out you must collect a ‘green form’ to give to your child’s teacher. Class teachers are instructed that they should not let children wait in the bus bay, meet parents outside the school grounds or allow students to walk home during school time. Dental Clinic The children’s community dental clinic is at Forrest Hill School, 20 Bond Street, Forrest Hill. They can be contacted on 410 7361 for an appointment. The dental service brings their mobile van to Campbells Bay School generally once a term, should you wish to make an appointment for your child to be seen, contact the dental nurses on the number above. Donations To maintain the high standard of facilities and of the education our school offers, it is necessary to supplement the grant we receive from the Ministry of Education. The School Donation is a voluntary payment and therefore it is not compulsory, but we hope you will understand that it is necessary if we are to continue to maintain the quality of services and resources presently enjoyed by the students. We try to be as efficient as possible in running the school and to continue to do this we need your support. Donations can also be paid by automatic payment instalments. To do this please set up an automatic payment with your bank, please contact the school office for school. bank details. Please note that your school donation payment may be eligible for a tax rebate by Inland Revenue. For further details see the Inland Revenue website. Food Children require a nourishing and plentiful lunch sufficient for a class snack break around 10am and eating times at 11.18am and 1.40pm, which will keep them focussed for the whole school day. Children may have a named water bottle in class or near class, stored in a sensible location. Lunch orders can be ordered each morning before 9.00am on Kindo and are delivered to school in time for the first eating break. No other food is allowed to be delivered to the school, unless it is an emergency and pre-arranged with the School Office. The school does not allow parents to bring food or lollies to school to hand out to their child’s classmates. Health and Accidents Minor injuries and illnesses are attended to by the first aid trained office staff. If the child is showing signs of sickness or has sustained an injury that we believe requires further medical treatment or needs to be sent home, we will contact the parent or guardian for collection. In an emergency, parents will be informed and the necessary medical assistance will be contacted. If your child is unwell in the morning, please do not send them to school as we do not have the personnel to attend sick children and a classroom or medical room is no substitute for one’s own bedroom. If your child has had a vomiting or diarrhoea bug, we are required by Te Whatu Ora to keep them out of school for 48 hours after their last episode. When children need to be on medication, parents are required to fill out a Medication Authority Form at the office and the medication will be kept in the sickbay or school office. Please note our office staff are first aid trained only. Head lice are a recurring problem in all schools and we strongly advise parents to carry out weekly inspections of children’s hair to prevent the spread of this problem. WDHB Hearing and Vision Technicians visit the school at times throughout the year, consented children will be tested and parents / caregivers will be informed of all results. Library The school library is the major resource centre of the school to which all pupils have access. Please assist us in the care of the library by seeing that books brought home are cared for and not damaged or lost. Please ensure that library books are returned on time and brought to and from school in your child’s book bag. Books damaged or lost will be charged at the value of the replacement. Lost Property Please ensure your child’s belongings including all uniform, bags, swimwear, lunchboxes are named with their full name. We try our best to return any named items back to your child. Unnamed lost property gathered in the school grounds is stored in the baskets in Room 38 by the Year 1 playground. Parents / caregivers are welcome to check the lost property at any time during the school day. Any remaining items are discarded at the end of each term. Mathletics Mathletics is a web-based programme that enables students to access their learning at any time. The programme allows work to be set that is individual to the needs of your student, and they will be able to access this at home and school. Students will be able to practise their basic facts at school and at home in a more interactive and engaging way. In addition, they will be able to work on applying their knowledge through activities that will be explained to them at school. If you wish to be able to support your child more at home, this work will also be available to them online. Mathletics has been well used in the school and we have seen some significant gains in student achievement when children have taken the opportunity to use the programme. By integrating it into home and school programmes there is strong evidence to show that it can target raising student achievement in maths. Messages for Children We are pleased to help in an emergency if you need to make contact with your child during the school day, but due to classes being held outside of the classroom throughout the day, we cannot guarantee the message will get through. Money at School Any money students bring to school should be for a specific purpose, ie a gold coin donation for a fundraising initiative. Music Tuition Individual music tuition is provided at school between 3:00 – 6:00pm, Wednesday – Friday, by the Music Education Centre. www.musiceducation.co.nz (www.musiceducation.co.nz) For further information please contact Music Education on 0800 893939, or email lessons@musiceducation.co.nz(mailto:lessons@musiceducation.co.nz) Newsletter Every fortnight, on a Friday, information will be shared to the community via our Hero Community Feed. This information will consist of upcoming and past events, school celebrations, general information and important messages from either our Principal and/or other members of staff. Please keep an eye out for these important updates. Permission to Administer Medication For safety reasons no medication should be left in children’s lunchboxes or school bags. Medication should be bought to the school office and a permission form completed to allow office staff to administer the medication to your child. Phones and Personal Digital Devices A personal digital device is any privately owned digital device. CBS does not operate a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programme but does realise some children may require a mobile device before or after school while commuting. We discuss the school rules about personal digital devices at the beginning of the year, and throughout the year as needed. Any changes to our school rules are communicated to students and our school community. Parent/Caregiver and student responsibilities If a parent/caregiver needs to contact their child urgently during the day, they should call the office. If a student brings a personal digital device to our school, the following guidelines apply: The school does not accept responsibility for lost, damaged, or stolen personal digital devices brought to the school but investigates any issues as appropriate. Students must turn their devices off in class and keep them out of sight. Personal digital devices may not be taken on EOTC events. Students are expected to follow our Digital Technology and Online Safety policy when using personal digital devices on school property or the school network. Inappropriate use If we see a student using a personal digital device inappropriately, we confiscate it. After the student locks the device, we place it in the office to be collected at the end of the day. Inappropriate use of a personal digital device may include: - using the device when not permitted - any sort of bullying, including online bullying - taking photos or videos of other people without their permission - forwarding inappropriate messages or content. Inappropriate use of a personal digital device is managed through the school Behaviour Management, Responding to Digital Incidents, and Surrender and Retention of Personal Digital Devices policies and procedures, as appropriate. Photographs Class and individual photos along with Cultural and Sports groups are taken each year by Photo Life, and are then available for you to purchase online. - International | Campbells Bay School
Welcome Campbells Bay School is one of Auckland’s top primary schools. Students can improve their English while studying the New Zealand Year 1 – 6 School Curriculum. Our school is proud of its cultural diversity and celebrates students’ success through a wide range of rich learning opportunities. Located in the heart of Campbells Bay community on the scenic North Shore of Auckland City, our school is close to many facilities: shopping malls, parks, local businesses, transport and beautiful beaches. The North Shore is a prime location for families with young children. Campbells Bay School is an inclusive and supportive environment promoting lifelong learning, academic achievement and student well-being through our school values of atawhai, whakaute and manawanui (kindness, respect and resilience). Our global reputation promotes our commitment to teaching, learning and support for our international community. You are welcome to join us for a school tour and see for yourself how we support and engage our International Students in a rich learning environment with their friends and peers. School Orientation – Your Learning Journey Begins An orientation programme has been specially designed to set our students up for success from the very beginning. We welcome students to the school with an orientation before the school year or term. The programme includes a short presentation that outlines how our school is run on a daily basis and to answer your questions you may have. This is also an opportunity for our international whānau to connect and meet members of the International Team in a comfortable setting. The programme is completed with a tour of the school and a look through our learning spaces. Rich Learning Opportunities – How do we meet the needs of our students While integrated into all classroom programmes, students also attend our special support classes delivered by our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) staff. All International students are encouraged to participate in all areas of school life, including camp, swimming, plant to taste, sports, cultural groups, leadership opportunities, music and the arts throughout the year. Pastoral Care Providing pastoral care is an important service provided by Campbells Bay School to our international students. Our pastoral care team assists with enrolment and helping new students, and their families, settle into New Zealand and the Campbells Bay School community. The Director of International Students is always available to help our international families. We also have parent-teacher interviews and written school reports throughout the year. Providing English language support is also an element of pastoral care. Lessons are held for 30-40 minutes, up to four times a week, and are conducted by our outstanding ESOL team. These lessons strengthen the oral and written language taught in the classroom, and additional reading and writing material is provided for students to work on at home. We are proud that our approach is responsive to students' needs. Students who are successfully accessing the curriculum are supported more at a distance, with the ESOL specialist providing support to the classroom teacher so that the particular English needs are met in the classroom where the student can learn alongside their peers. International student trips have been arranged once a year, and give these students a chance to experience different aspects of New Zealand. In the past this has included visiting a working New Zealand farm, and a cruise around the Auckland harbour and a visit from Zoo Ventures. Parents, siblings and agents have been invited on these trips. - Sports Overview | Campbells Bay School
Sports Overview As a school we recognise that sporting opportunities provide our students with rich learning experiences. Participation in sport and physical activity by students and staff has positive benefits for the individual, the school and the community. SPORTS HANDBOOK SPORT INFORMATION PRESENTATION TO PARENTS We strive for excellence in providing and supporting the best sporting opportunities and environments in which our students can participate, learn and grow. Positive sporting experiences and opportunities inspire on-going participation and an enjoyment of physical activity and sport for life. The sporting opportunities at Campbells Bay School provide all students with a variety of sports to participate in, develop skills and achieve personal success. We are constantly working to do this in an environment that has a healthy balance between participation and competition. Our sports fees include an administration fee and the cost of supplying specialised items related to some sports. With all our sporting opportunities, winning is not our intended outcome. Participation for all, healthy habits for life and extending students with talents is our focus. Click on the link below to see which weekly competition sports teams are available to which year groups and when they are available during the year. Sports Offered Weekly sports overview Students can play in a school team that represents Campbells Bay School in locally run, weekly competitions. The five sports for these weekly competitions, supported by our local sporting associations, are: • Flippa ball (junior water polo) • Hockey • Miniball (junior basketball) • Netball • Touch Rugby These sports are available to different year levels at different times during the school year. The majority of these sports teams are for students in year three through to year six, however some of these sports are available to students in the junior school (years one and two). All children who are keen and registered by the announced date are able to play. All students are able to participate in weekly sporting competitions. Everyone can play! Weekly sport by term Selection process Team selections for the teams in the junior school and the middle school (years three and four) are not trial based. They are mostly based on friendships and classmates. The emphasis is on participation and enjoyment. As students move into the senior school (years five and six), teams play in graded competitions and for most of these sports, trials are part of the selection process for teams. The year five and six teams are trialed where possible by neutral sporting code representatives. Sports communication plan The trials for zone days and interschool teams is through the daily news (CBTV). These trials are not advertised through the weekly school newsletter or information letters. Coaches & managers note The successful running of these sports teams at Campbells Bay School relies on parents to volunteer to help with the coaching and managing of teams. Each team will need a parent volunteer to coach the team and a parent volunteer to help manage the team. Please note that in accordance with the Vulnerable Children’s Act 2014, the Board of Trustees has adopted a procedure whereby that from the start of 2017 only adults (all persons 18 years of age and over) who have undertaken a police vet with acceptable results can be selected to manage/coach a school sport’s team. If you would like to volunteer to coach or manage a team, please go to the school website to ‘police vetting’ and complete the form as per the instructions. You will not be able to coach or manage a sports team if you have not completed this police vetting process. TERM SPORTS TERM DATES 2025 QUICKLINKS Fli ppa Ball CLCK HERE Netball CLICK HERE Hockey CLICK HERE Touch Rugby CLICK HERE Miniball CLICK HERE Schedule Sports communication plan Communication regarding trials for zone days and interschool teams is through the daily news (CBTV). These trials are not advertised through the weekly school newsletter or information letters. Selection process Students are trialed with teacher/parent experts within the school or if the competition is formed from a current weekly competition, we enter existing teams. The trial process for these teams is based on merit and fair play. If your child does not make these zone day teams, all of the sports can be played at a weekly competition through the school or through a club. Equity in competition While increased participation is one of our goals, in regards to zone days, we are limited by the constraints of the criteria set by each school or local sporting organisation. For example, while it would be great to take 20 runners per race for cross country, each school can only enter 8 runners per race. However, it is important to note that we are not usually limited with the numbers of teams entered in weekly competitions, and all children who are keen and registered by the announced date are able to play. ZONE, CLUSTER & INTERSCHOOL SPORTS ZONE DAY & INTERSCHOOL DATES 2023 CLICK TO ZONE DAY INFO Extra Sports During the school year other interschool and zone day sporting opportunities arise. Sports like T-ball (junior softball) and rugby festival days are often on offer from the local sporting organisation. Decisions regarding these sorts of days are accessed and made on a yearly basis. The school also encourages and provides opportunities for students to participate in big, community run sporting events. These events have a small element of competitiveness but the main focus is on participation, ‘giving it a go’ and the enjoyment of being involved in a physical and sporting activity. These are events like: • Weetbix Kids Tryathlon • Beach Series • Shore to Shore Fun Run Useful Information SPORT GUIDING PRINCIPLES • To provide a variety of sporting activities which enable and encourage student participation in the sporting life of the school. • All students will be encouraged to be involved in sport regardless of their ability. • Each student will be encouraged to achieve personal success. • To promote the attainment of sporting excellence. • To support and provide guidance to all volunteers involved in sporting opportunities for our students. • To create an environment that recognises and encourages physical activity and lifelong participation and enjoyment of sport. • Fair and positive play and sportsmanship are regarded as paramount at all times. • To maintain in sport the high standards of behaviour, uniform and conduct that is expected across all areas of the school. • To promote positive attitudes in all aspects of sport (i.e. participation, refereeing, administration, commitment and support).
