We have been a PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) school since 2018. PB4L is a long-term, systematic approach involving: whole-school change initiatives, targeted group programmes, and individual student support services. We teach the behaviours that support our vision of life-long learners and we have high expectations of our students.
A video from the Ministry of Education – what is PB4L?
We have a clear template of expected behaviours for our students, staff and whanau – you can view this by clicking this LINK. We also have a clear process for addressing undesirable behaviour. You can view this here. At CBS we LOVE to reward and acknowledge expected behaviours alongside our school values. Students receive plenty of positive praise when they are doing the right thing and class rewards when they fill jars of pom poms or gems or points under each value. Year groups will have goals specific to them every fortnight that the teachers help students to focus on. We also acknowledge individual students doing fantastic things during team assemblies with our value certificates. Our most prestigious acknowledgement is our termly Principal awards. Given to one student per class. You can find out more about the criteria for these Principal awards below.
- Principal awards can be given to students who show all or some of the school values of whakaute – respect, manawanui – resilience, atawhai – kindness; in a consistent way over and above other students.
- Principal awards can be given to students who have achieved academic or extracurricular excellence. They may have shown strengths, determination, effort and/or perseverance in these areas.
- Principal awards can be given to a student more than once. Not all students will receive an award by the time they graduate.
