COMING UP
Principal Message
Welcome to Term 2
Kia ora. We welcome you and your tāmariki back to school. It is my privilege to be Acting Principal for the next five weeks, until we welcome our new Principal, Bevan Verryt.
Our teachers returned on Monday, participating in the first of four teacher-only days that the Ministry of Education has made available to schools over the next two years. The purpose of the day was to allow our teachers time to engage with, gain awareness and understanding of what is happening with the New Zealand Curriculum refresh. The teachers were introduced to Te Mātaiaho – the new name for the curriculum refresh which means “to observe and examine the strands of learning.” Over the next two years, all areas of the curriculum are being reviewed and refreshed to make our curriculum document relevant for today’s generation. The refreshed curriculum will support every ākonga (learner) to experience success in their learning.
Our iwi, Te Kawerau a Maki started the day with a presentation introducing themselves and sharing their whakapapa to our staff. Having our iwi work alongside and in collaboration with our staff, is truly a gift for our school.

SCHOOL NEWS – Welcome to our new teachers
We welcome Chloe Ferguson who has opened our next new entrant class, with four lovely five year olds who also have their first day today.
Welcome to Zoe Macready who is our new year three teacher for Room 16. Zoe is teaching alongside Jo Kim until the end of week 2, forming those important relationships with students and ensuring a smooth transition.
ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATION
All members of our community are invited to attend our ANZAC Commemoration, to be held Friday 28 April starting at 9:15 a.m. on the covered basketball court.
Our ANZAC Commemoration, pre Covid-19, was an important part of the school’s calendar and we are excited to be able to hold this again this year. Hence, all members of our school community are invited to attend and make this an extra special event.
Should the weather not permit the commemoration to take place on the covered basketball court, we will move the event to the Hall.
Reporting to Parents
One of our goals as a school is to continue to build strong partnerships with parents to support the holistic development of our students at CBS. With this in mind, we are changing the way we report to parents and over the year we will be regularly communicating what this will look like.
We are delighted to invite you to book a time to meet with your child’s teacher for a 12 minute ‘Learning Conversation’. We have made this change from ‘next step’ interviews as we believe that meeting with you and discussing what’s important to you and your child is critical for their success.
Learning Conversations
Term 2: Week 2
Tuesday 2nd May and Thursday 4th May
Click here to go to the website. The code you need is: 5ct8t
This quality time will be led by what is really important for you to talk about. To ensure we are able to prepare effectively for this meeting, your child’s class teacher will be sending out a google form. The purpose of the form is to find out what you would like to discuss and for you to share any information you would like before the meeting.
Further examples of what might be discussed during the conversation could be:
- How your child has settled into school this year after a disrupted start
- A celebration of highlights across the curriculum
- How they are managing themselves eg, independence, friendships, looking after their belongings
- Participation and contribution in class and around the school
- Examples of how they are showing our school values
- Areas of focus and how you can help at home
If you have any questions, please get in touch with one of our Deputy Principals who are both more than happy to answer your questions.
