On Board

We are coming to the end of our first full year of “in class” teaching in three years. Across the school, we have tracked rapid progress for our students and seen the difference that “in person” teaching and learning makes.

And our students have shown amazing resilience and grit this year to make up for lost time. Their unique interests, and passions show through their achievements and progress. Some things will have come easy for them. Some things would have been hard, and they have had a growth mindset, and persistence to make progress one lesson at a time. Well done to them all!

A huge thank you to our CBS staff, who always put their students’ progress, achievement, and wellbeing first. The rich learning opportunities provided, under continuing difficult circumstances, is a tribute to all our amazing educators and the people who support them.

Our strong school community makes a difference, and we are grateful to the parents and caregivers, grandparents and other special people, who participate in school life every day. Your generosity of time and spirit is important and much appreciated.

Board priorities for next six months

The Board have three main priorities over the next six months

  • Most importantly, we need to recruit our next exceptional Principal ready to start in Term 2 2023. We have already begun the recruitment process, and will keep you informed as it progresses.
  • Effective regular communication with you, using a variety of ways to keep you informed and involved. The new monthly “On Board” section in the school newsletter is our first step with this.
  • Updating the school Strategic Plan. We have some data that helps us understand what is truly important to our school community and your aspirations for your children. You will also have an opportunity to provide more specific feedback and ideas, as our Strategic Plan evolves.

Final thoughts for 2022

We wish our Graduating Year Sixes all the very best for next year and the start of intermediate.

We hope all our students and families enjoy the last few days of 2022 at CBS.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer break and we look forward to seeing what 2023 brings for CBS and our community.

Leaving CBS this year?

School Leavers – Notice re ezlunch / Kindo School Shop

If your family is leaving our school and has been using ezlunch or Kindo, please make sure to stop any regular automatic payments that have been set up before the school year finishes.  You may also need to transfer or close your account which can be done as follows:

  • Not sure if your new school is using Kindo?  If you’re not sure if your new school is using Kindo, you can either ask them directly or go to “My Details” in your Kindo account and click on the list of schools to see if your new school is listed.
  • New school IS using Kindo.  If your new school is using Kindo, simply click on the new school from the list in “My Details” of your Kindo account and you’ll be attached to the new school’s menu.  Any balance on your Kindo account will remain available to spend with the new school.
  • New school is NOT using Kindo, or you no longer need Kindo.  If you need to close your Kindo account, use the “Close Account” button within the “My Details” section of your Kindo account.  You can either withdraw your account balance or choose to donate your balance to the school.  Please note that all withdrawals will be made via electronic payment to your New Zealand bank account. Kindo is unable to process cash withdrawals.

If you are wanting to withdraw your Kindo account balance or make a donation that exceeds Kindo’s threshold (currently more than $10,000 total within one year), Kindo may need to undertake some identity checks on you to comply with its obligations under the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Countering Financing of Terrorism (CFT) Act 2009.  Please action the withdrawal or donation in your Kindo account as outlined above and if these AML checks are necessary Kindo will advise of the next steps required in this regard. Kindo has endeavoured to make this process as pain-free as possible and appreciates your patience.

Teacher Only Day Announcement

Ministry of Education Announcement – Teacher Only Days
The Ministry have announced that schools will have two teacher only days allocated to them in 2023 for teachers to have professional development changes due to the NZ Curriculum Refresh
They have given guidance around when these can be taken. The first day is scheduled at Campbells Bay School on Monday 24 April, 2023. The second one will be confirmed once the Ministry has released the date to us.

Update from our Ministry of Education

One more term until we move in!

Construction on the new classroom block will continue over the school holidays as the Term 2 opening date approaches.

When you come back after the summer holidays things may look a little different around the building site with concrete going in at the front and back of the block, a new playground under way, and enabling works started for a bike shed and wooden boardwalk underneath the pōhutukawa trees at the back of the building.

The school’s front vehicle gate will also be widened, and one of the titoki trees removed near the office to allow for the driveway and curbing to be extended for fire and emergency vehicle access. Hopefully we’ll never need fire engines on the school grounds but we’ve been required by Fire and Emergency NZ to improve access width just in case we ever do. As part of the landscaping for the new building we’ll ensure another titoki tree is planted in a nearby location.

If you are using the school grounds in the holidays please be aware some of the construction fence lines may be moved, particulary access down the stairs past the school office to Rooms 7-10.

Fingers crossed for great summer weather so these outdoor concrete pours happen on schedule and we can’t wait to see the progress when school starts again next year.

From your MOE Construction Team

Asbestos Removal

On the 16 December (once school has closed for the year), Room 32 will be demolished. This is a classroom on the field. This Ministry owned temporary classroom was placed on the school site by the Ministry of Education, to accommodate our students while the new classroom block is being completed. The removal of all the classrooms on the field will occur once the new building is open.
The project team decided to remove this one classroom, as it requires a specialist asbestos removal unit, ideal when school has closed for the year. The classroom will be gone within one to two days and fencing will be placed where it once was.
For information pertaining to the removal of this class, please contact Union Demolition on 021 544 905, or the main project Site Manager on 021 545 195.

School Update on Property Works Over the Holidays

In addition to the construction site and class removal, the school will be a hive of activity and maintenance. The joinery project should be completed over the break, it has experienced unprecendented delays due to staff shortages. There are roofing upgrades across the school and internal refurbishments of all prefabs, Rooms 15-17, 24-27 and 18-21. These classrooms will be painted, have new autex, lino and carpet, ready for the new year!
In the long term we have bathroom upgrades scheduled for the main block, and class refurbishments for Rooms 4 – 14. Watch this space!

Book Week 2022

What an amazing time we had prompting reading at Campbells Bay school – READING IS FUN! We had authors special messages to CBS, we had authors visiting us, late night shopping, Kapa Haka blessings, Buddy classes got together, wall displays created, book reviews, colouring competitions and of course our Book Parade.
Thank you to our amazing sponsors – Dominoes Pizza (Forrest Hill), The Book Lover Store (Milford), Countdown (Milford), New World (Milford), The Warehouse (Milford), Campbells Bay Tennis Club and The Millenium who donated prizes and judged competitions.
Thank you to our CBS Whanau for supporting our Book Fair where we sold over $27000. CBS gain an amazing contribution from Scholastic that goes towards enhancing learning for our students and more books. Thank you to those families who also brought a book from our Book Fair to donate to our Library.
The Book Parade costumes were amazing! If you have a costume you would like to donate to our Library for display, please drop it in to the Library before Wednesday lunchtime.
If you have a book(s) to donate to our Library, please send them in now or in the New Year.
Please encourage your child(ren) to read over the holidays! It is a great time to have a family chapter book to read together over the holiday period.
Happy Holidays and Happy Reading!

Missing Scooter

‘If your child has taken a purple scooter like this (without the markings circled in blue) by accident, can you please return to our school office? Thank you.’
