To the following students who have started at Campbells Bay School
Dustin Gao, Queenie Wu
Message from the Principal
Kia ora koutou!
I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend. Thank you for your support for our Teacher Only Day on Friday. These Teacher Only Days were provided to schools as a result of NZEI negotiations with the Ministry of Education. They are to support professional development, collaboration and well being.
Our day started at 8.30am with refreshment of some of the changes in legislation, in particular the Privacy Act 2020 and the Education and Training Act 2020. We then moved into Curriculum, reviewing each area for the morning. CBS is currently reviewing the clarity and coherence of our curriculum. The vision is to have an online platform where staff and parents can access learning progressions and curriculum content at each level easily. We also are developing a list of key practices you will see in each classroom. These are evidence-based decisions and agreement on how we deliver our curriculum.
We also spent time launching our new Professional Growth Cycle. This is the reformed appraisal process. Teachers worked in their professional learning groups to re-review the student needs in their class and reflect on what they need to improve on to best meet these needs.
Personally, it is always very special to have our teachers all in the same room together. Their passion for our students, reflection on their practice and commitment to improving is inspiring. Our teachers and support staff are the most critical element to the success of our school.
In other news, we are still awaiting more information about the waste water pipe works along Beach Road. It seems they have been delayed. They are considering starting further away from Aberdeen Road and instead down at Castor Bay Beach, maybe by the time they reach us it will coincide with the school term break (here’s hoping)! It is a waiting game still and so watch this space.
I hope you have a lovely short week ahead.

2021 ICAS Competition
Dear Parents and Caregivers of Year 4, 5 and 6 students,
We are delighted to inform you that Campbells Bay School will be participating in the world-renowned ICAS Assessments again this year. ICAS is developed by UNSW Global, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the University of New South Wales, with over 35 years’ experience in educational assessments. The competitions offered are as follows:
ICAS Digital Technologies
Thursday 12 August 2021 – Cost to participate in test: $23.00
Monday 16 August 2021 – Cost to participate in test: $23.00
Monday 23 August 2021 – Cost to participate in test: $23.00
ICAS Spelling Bee
Tuesday 24 August 2021 – Cost to participate in test: $23.00
Monday 30 August 2021 – Cost to participate in test: $23.00
These assessments will take place during the day.
Who should enter these competitions
The competitions are open to students in Years 4, 5 and 6. We suggest that you avoid entering for subjects in which your child is still developing mastery. We encourage you to consider entering your child into ICAS this year. The assessments are suitable for students wishing to extend themselves academically and take up the personal challenge of competing in an international assessment. Your child will be presented with high-quality, expert-developed questions, allowing them to apply their learning without the need for prior study or revision.
Advantages of entering the competitions
● Every student gains a certificate of participation, credit, distinction or high distinction
● A results summary provides parents and students with a print-out of strengths and weaknesses within each subject area.
● Students learn valuable lessons in time management, the importance of reading questions carefully and checking their answers.
ICAS Assessments are now online, a move that reflects a sector-wide transition to computer-based assessment. This allows greater accessibility for students and faster delivery of results.
Spelling machines, dictionaries and cell phones are not permitted.
Once numbers are finalised, the exact times can be scheduled. Normally Year 4 students compete first at 9.00am, followed by Year 5 and Year 6, depending on team programmes. All competitions are held in school time and students are released from class to participate.
If you are new to the competitions, we recommend that you visit the school’s home learning page for practice papers by clicking the following link –
Should you wish to enrol in one or more competitions, please enter online via our school online payment portal. Enrolments will be available from 9.00am on Tuesday 1 June. Click this link to access the school website:
Please do not register your child if they are not in year 4, 5 or 6, as they will not be accepted.
Due to the school organisation the closing date will be earlier than stated on the ICAS website. Entries must be received and paid for by Friday 9 July 2021.
Late entries cannot be accepted.
Lyla’s bake sale fundraiser
Over the weekend Lyla organised her friends, Eva Cunningham, Olivia Geelen, Madeline and Marissa Tong to do a bake sale.
Lyla choose the charity Look Good Feel Good Charity, which helps people going through cancer treatment to feel better about themselves after losing their hair.
These are some of the photos… of the process – making signs, and doing the baking.
They raised over $700 in 3 hours on Saturday.
