Principal’s Message

It is so so so good to be back! My parental leave has flown by filled with all the good stuff one can imagine welcoming a new little one into the world and scattered with greater global challenges than I could ever have imagined 2020 would bring.

We had a wonderful powhiri this morning, thanks to the kapa haka and school for such a lovely welcome back. It was great to be able to gather everyone together. Being at Level 1 is a bonus.

For me the focus this term is about reconnecting with students, staff and whanau and supporting everyone to have a great final term of what has been a year filled with challenges. Let’s end on a high note!

There is a lot for me to catch up on, even though I have been in contact regularly with John and the associate principal’s throughout the year. With this in mind, a reminder that nothing is ever too big or small to contact me about. Do not hesitate to get in touch [email protected] or just make a time with the office to come and have a chat.

Pink Shirt Day

CBS will be celebrating Pink Shirt Day on Friday, 16 October 2020. Pink Shirt Day is about working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting positive social relationships. On Pink Shirt Day we ask all New Zealanders to Speak up and stand together to stop bullying.

What does speak up, stand together, stop bullying mean?

Speak up

Giving voice to a problem is the first step towards addressing it. Having conversations with your friends, family, whānau, children, parents, teachers, students and wider communities is a great way to come up with ideas and strategies to address bullying. Speaking up is also about asking for help when you need it. This can be scary, and sometimes the first person you ask can’t or won’t do anything to help you. Keep asking. Pink Shirt Day shows there are many people who care about supporting you.

Stand together

Bullying behaviour is influenced by the actions and values of friends, families and whānau, schools, workplaces and whole communities. Real change happens when we stand together, sending a strong message that there is no place for bullying in New Zealand. Bullying often makes people feel alone, but Pink Shirt Day shows that many people care. Many people want to play their part in making New Zealand a safe, welcoming and respectful place for everyone, regardless of age, gender, ability, or cultural background.

Stop bullying

On Pink Shirt Day, look out on the sea of pink and know that together we can stop bullying.

What will Pink Shirt Day look like at CBS?

Friday 16 October – wear pink to receive a sticker, and one person from each class will receive a certificate for being an amazing Pink Shirt Day ambassador!

Students and staff are encouraged to wear something pink – a pink t-shirt, pink accessories; it could even be as simple as a pink sticker or ribbon to show solidarity and help to create a sea of pink.

Our school values of manawanui, whakaute and atawhai show that we do not accept any form of bullying. Classes will use circle time discussion to touch upon the idea of everyone being unique and different, and about celebrating diversity. Through our CBS values, we can Stand up, Speak up and Stop bullying.

If you would like to further the conversation at home, https://www.pinkshirtday.org.nz/schools/ has lots of activities and discussion points, as well as further information about Pink Shirt Day.

How will you join the movement on Friday, 16 October 2020 to stop bullying and spread kindness?
